Owner and manager Ed Tuchler trained in architecture at Virginia Tech before applying his knowledge to practical field experience as a designer, builder and now owner of Shelter Alternatives. He created Energy Check in 2007 as a means to advise his clients and community on how to make their homes as energy efficient as possible. As owner of Shelter Alternatives and Energy Check, Ed recently accepted the 2010 Best Green Business award, given by the Virginia Sustainable Building Network.
We are pleased to announce the recent hire of Douglas Ling as our Director of Operations. Doug is a bright business manager with an infectious enthusiasm about energy conservation and efficiency - more about Doug to come.
Jason Klawitter is Lead Energy Installer for our Field Crew. Jason has experience in new construction and remodeling, both residential and commercial. His skills include electrical, HVAC, plumbing, roofing, painting and siding installation.
Jason enjoys seeing the change from the initial Home Performance Assessment to the completion of the improvements and knowing that they have helped the client, the environment and himself. He also likes being part of a company that helps to give back to the community. Jason takes pride in his attention to detail and going the extra mile to make sure every customer is satisfied! When he is not on the job, Jason enjoys playing with his son, hunting, fishing and golfing.
Roy Akers is Job Supervisor at Energy Check and we rely on his vast experience in the building industry. Roy’s qualifications include a contractor’s license, certification in weatherization and certification in lead containment.
Roy enjoys the positive work environment at Energy Check including solid staff support, training opportunities, and great clientele. Roy also enjoys spending time with his family, including target shooting with his daughter.
Kristofor Colson is our Home Performance Director. The experience that he brings to our team includes remodeling work and supervision of a cabinet/remodel shop. Kris is a certified BPI Building Analyst, BPI Envelope Professional and holds his IR Certificate.
Kris likes that his position at Energy Check is helping customers save money and increase their quality of living while having a positive impact on the environment. Kris’ hobbies include music, motorsports and outdoors.
Caroline Bennett is our Marketing Coordinator. Caroline brings experience in small business marketing, graphic design and printing to our team. Caroline is an alumni of Virginia Tech and an active member of our community.
Her interest in environmental issues and sustainable living make her a perfect fit for the Energy Check team. She enjoys promoting Energy Check, because she knows our history of supporting local music and theater.
